New BH Series Explained: No re-registration of cars required as you shift states

In a big move to simplify processes for auto owners the Centre has introduced a new vehicle registration mark called the Bharat series or ‘BH’ in all vehicles. Announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways this new policy takes away the hassle of re-registration of a vehicles when the owners shift from one state/union territory to another. Here are the details-:

How does BH Series work?

A vehicle with BH mark will not require a new registration mark when the owner shifts from one State to another.The format of BH-series registration mark will be YY BH #### XX. YY denotes the year of first registration, BH is code for Bharat Series, #### is the randomised four digit number and XX are two alphabets, according to road transport ministry.

How does it help?

It puts an end to a cumbersome process for vehicle owners who shift due to official work from re-registering their vehicle and paying, collecting back road tax from states. 

Who is eligible?

This facility will be available on voluntary basis to Defense personnel as well as Central and State Government employees. Employees of private companies having offices in four or more states can also take advantage of this facility.

What is the tax payable for a BH series registration?

According to government notification, the motor vehicle tax levied by the state and union territories at the time of registration in respect to BH-series non-transport vehicle will be 8 per cent in case of vehicles costing up to ₹10 lakh, 10 per cent in case of vehicles costing between ₹10-20 lakh and 12 per cent in case of vehicles costing above 20 lakh.
