Infrequent bowel movements due to constipation can be quite troublesome, leading to more serious health problems like haemorrhoids. According to Harvard, almost 40% to 60% of older adults regularly deal with constipation but age is not necessarily the root of the problem.

People often turn to harsh laxatives to ease themselves but if you’re looking for a natural fix, here are some diet changes that may help:

Eating fibre-rich food like fruits and vegetables can help regulate bowel movements. You should aim to consume at least 25 grams of fibre every day. Fibre-rich foods like figs, apples, black beans and leafy greens can act as natural laxatives for the body.

Hydration is also a key factor. Apart from your daily water intake, make sure to drink enough healthy fluids and avoid dehydrating drinks like soda or caffeinated beverages.

In some cases, magnesium can also relax the bowels and pull water into the intestines. Some great natural sources to get your magnesium are pumpkin seeds, almonds, spinach and soy milk.

Natural home remedies are great for a bad bowel day but if you have a serious bowel obstruction and face constant irregularity in your motions, it is best to consult a doctor.
