Earlier this year, hundreds of elephants died in Botswana under 'mysterious circumstances. The deaths baffled conservationists across the globe.

Now, government officials have revealed that the elephants died by ingesting toxins produced by cyanobacteria. It seems like the elephants developed a neurological disorder after consuming the toxin-rich water and then passed away. The number of deaths ceased once water dried up.

However, no other animal species died after ingesting the water. Even scavengers like vultures found feeding on the carcass of the elephants showed no signs of illness.

Experts ruled out human efforts like poaching and sabotage from the causes of deaths.
