Every year on May 28 we observe Menstrual Hygiene Day to highlight the importance of period health and hygiene across the world. The program was initiated in 2014 by a German-based NGO 'WASH United' and aims to benefit women and girls across the world.
Menstrual hygiene management can be challenging for both women and girls in developing countries as they do not have access to the proper materials. Apart from this, traditional culture also makes it difficult for them to discuss menstruation publicly.
Menstrual Hygiene Day offers an opportunity to actively advocate for the integration of period hygiene into local, national and global programs. This year, as COVID-19 continues to deepen menstrual inequities across the globe, a virtual event is being organised to shift attention towards the plight of menstruators hit hardest by the pandemic.
