Shrinking snow caps in the Himalayas have led to the spread of toxic green algae blooms that are so big that they're now visible from space. NASA images captured the 'sea sparkle' floating around the Arabian Sea in India and Pakistan among other nations. This is a cause of concern as the algae tends to drive out plankton, an important element in the sea's food chain, threatening fish in the water. The continuous loss of snow, according to researchers from Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, is fuelling the growth of the toxic by making the ocean surface warmer. The research has been published in the journal Scientific Reports.
