The debate over split captaincy for Team India has been doing the rounds for quite a while now and it seems that it may soon come true. According to a report in the Times of India, Virat Kohli is likely to step down as the white-ball captain after the World T20, paving the way for Rohit Sharma to lead India in ODIs and T20I.
BCCI sources told TOI that Virat himself will make the announcement. Kohli is of the view that he needs to concentrate on his batting and go back to becoming what he’s always been — the best batsman in the world. The source added that Virat has had prolonged discussions with Rohit and the team management and the two are on the same page.
Virat is India's most successful Test skipper and has also done well in the limited overs formats. Team India has won 65 of the 95 ODIs under him while 29 of the 45 T20I under Virat's leadership. However, an ICC trophy at the senior level still eludes the 32-year-old. On the other hand, India won the Nidahas tri-nation T20 tournament and the ODI Asia Cup under Rohit in 2018. Moreover, the Hitman has also led Mumbai Indians to 5 IPL titles.
Virat last scored an international hundred way back in November 2019. The BCCI source also stressed upon the fact that if Rohit takes over as the limited overs captain, Kohli can work on his ODI batting as he needs that space and freshness.
Kohli became the Test skipper in 2014 while he took over captaincy duties in the limited overs format when Dhoni stepped down in 2017.
