Being in water during this hot and humid weather feels relaxing and soothing. But spending long hours in the pool can make you tan.

Recently, dermatologist Jushya Bhatia Sarin shared a post on Instagram, highlighting the reasons our skin becomes prone to tanning underwater.

Reasons of tanning underwater

  1. The pool floor or the salt in sea water reflects the light back on your skin.
  2. Being underwater we tend to forget how long we have exposed our skin to the sun, making it burn.
  3. Water increases our uninhibited exposure to UV rays for longer.

Precautions to be taken

She advises to use a water-resistant sunscreen and re-apply it every 40-80 minutes. Always avoid swimming in outdoor pools during peak hours of the sun. Use gentle body wash after swimming and avoid harsh soaps and scrubbing.
