International Youth Day focuses on the rights of young people to have access to healthcare, education and employment. According to the United Nations (UN), it is observed to celebrate the youth and their potential as partners in the global society.
In 1991, the idea for International Youth Day was proposed by the youth who gathered in Vienna, Austria, to attend the first session of the World Youth Forum of the United Nations System.
Later, in 1998, the first session of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth took place and they adopted the resolution to proclaim August 12 as International Youth Day.
Youth plays a vital role in today's global society; thus, International Youth Day is crucial. The UN states that there is a need for inclusive support mechanisms that ensure youth continue to boost the efforts collectively and individually to restore the planet and protect life. Meanwhile, keeping in mind the integration of biodiversity in the transformation of food systems.
This year, the theme of International Youth Day is "intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages." The purpose of this day is to amplify the message that action is needed from all generations to achieve Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals and leave no one behind.
