World Blood Donor Day 2023: Know who all can donate blood and what requires to be a healthy donor

Every year, June 14 is observed as World Blood Donor Day. This day is celebrated to thank blood donors for saving someone's life and to raise awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products. 

Theme of World Blood Donor Day 2023

This year, the theme for World Blood Donor Day is Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often.

However, there is still confusion among people about who can donate blood and the basic requirements that a healthy donor needs. World Health Organization has shared the list of basic things that are required for donating blood. 

  1. According to WHO, a person should be aged between 18-65 to donate blood. However, the age rules vary from country to country. 
  2. The minimum weight should be at least 50 kg but in some countries, a person weighing at least 45 kg can also donate blood. 
  3. You cannot donate blood if you have a cold, flu, sore throat, cold sore, stomach bug or any other infection. 
  4. A person should have a minimum haemoglobin level for blood donation.
  5. If you have recently got a tattoo or piercing done then you cannot donate blood for 6 months from the date of the procedure.

Moreover, there is also a detailed guideline about the behaviour eligibility criteria and it could again vary from country to country.
