Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the ovaries, which are part of the female reproductive system. It typically originates in the cells that cover the outer surface of the ovary, although it can also start in the egg-producing cells within the ovaries. Ovarian cancer is known for often being diagnosed at an advanced stage, as symptoms may not appear until the disease has progressed.  According to reports, it accounts for 3.33% (24015) of cancer-related deaths in the world.

Let us know in more detail about Ovarian cancer and what are some of its early symptoms.

Symptoms of Ovarian cancer

While symptoms of ovarian cancer can remain dormant for years, some common signs of Ovarian cancer are:

Abdominal bloating

Ovarian cancer is associated with features of abdominal discomfort and bloating. If you have been constantly bloated or feeling full after eating little, visit the doctor immediately.

Unexplained weight loss

Another ignored sign of ovarian cancer is unexplained weight loss. Unintentional weight loss is at times associated with ovarian malignancy.

Changes in Bowel movements

Alterations in bowel movements, such as constipation or diarrhea, that persist over time and can't be attributed to dietary changes or other factors.

Urgent need to urinate

Needing to urinate more often than usual, or experiencing a sudden, urgent need to urinate, even when the bladder isn't full.

Irregular menstruation

Irregularities in menstrual periods, such as changes in frequency, duration, or flow. This can include postmenopausal bleeding or spotting.

Pain during intercourse

If you continuously feel pain during sexual intercourse, it is also a symptom of ovarian cancer. Therefore these symptoms should not be ignored.

Treatment for Ovarian cancer

The usual treatment for ovarian cancer involves a combination of surgery to remove cancerous tissue and chemotherapy to eliminate any remaining cancer cells. The exact treatment plan is tailored to factors like the cancer's stage and type, as well as the patient's overall health and preferences. Detecting and treating ovarian cancer early can significantly enhance outcomes, underscoring the importance of awareness and routine medical examinations.
