One of Delhi's oldest bookstores, The Bookshop, holds a special place in the hearts of readers and has been a literary cornerstone in the city for generations.

The iconic bookstore, "The Bookshop," located in Jor Bagh, New Delhi is shutting down after 52 years. The news of the same was shared by the owner’s daughter Rachna Singh, through social media. The book store with two branches one in Khan and another one located in Jor Bagh market, was opened by KD Singh in 1971. The Khan market one closed in 2006.

Rachna on her Facebook shared - "Dear friends of The Book Shop,
It is with sadness that I would like to announce that on 31 October 2023 The Book Shop will down its shutters—and we will dissolve the partnership that owns it. The Book Shop was founded by my parents, KD and Nini Singh, over 50 years ago. I first entered it when it was two years old, and I quite literally grew up among its bookshelves. And, for all these decades, it was an integral part of the lives of my siblings and I and that is why the sadness I feel as I write this message of farewell is bigger and wider and deeper and more intense than I thought possible. But there is a time for everything. As it is said, to everything there is a season, The Book Shop, too, has had its season, now it’s time to move on. But before I go I would like to thank you, our readers, who were responsible for making The Book Shop what it was."

'The Bookshop' ready for its next chapter

However, there's a silver lining as some of its dedicated staff members are planning to open a new bookstore, called 'The Bookshop Inc' somewhere near Lodhi market. This transition will ensure that the spirit of The Bookshop will live on in a different form, offering a fresh chapter for book enthusiasts in the city.
