With England having raced to 120 for no loss, India needed quick wickets to stand a chance to bounce back in the Test and got their first 15 runs later. Haseeb Hameed was the next to fall for 68 but in walked Joe Root and once again dominated from the word go. He went on to smash 121 runs and was well supported by David Malan, who was making his comeback into the Test arena. He though missed a ton and was out for 70. India showed some signs of life in the 3rd session with some quick wickets, but England ended Day 2 still in command at 423/8, leading Kohli's men by 345 runs.
