A Tokyo court handed down prison terms for the American father-son duo, accused of helping Nissan's former chairman, Carlos Ghosn, escape to Lebanon while awaiting trial in Japan.
Michael Taylor, a former US special forces operative, was sentenced Monday to two years in prison, while his son Peter was sentenced to one year and eight months. They were charged with helping Ghosn in escaping out of Japan in a big box that was flown on a private jet via Turkey to Lebanon.
The Taylors, did not contest their role in the escape of Ghosn, a move that US prosecutors have described as "one of the most brazen and well-orchestrated escape acts in recent history".
According to the prosecution, the Ghosn family paid the Taylors more than $860,000 for preparation and logistical costs, and $500,000 in cryptocurrency for lawyers' fees.
Ghosn was arrested in Japan in November 2018 on charges of under-reporting his compensation.
