International Day of Peace 2021: The Covid-19 pandemic has brought economies to a halt, devastated homes and impacted numerous lives the world over. As per the United Nations, there are still several countries that have not even received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
The pandemic combined with a continuation of hostility, social unrest and political conflict has resulted in more lives being lost than saved.
Observed on 21st September each year, the International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. In 2001, through a unanimous vote, the General Assembly designated the day as a period of cease-fire and non-violence.
The United Nations further highlighted that a continuation in global ceasefire will help ensure that even people caught in the middle of a conflict have easy access to life-saving vaccinations and medical treatments.
The theme for this year is - Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world. The day aims at working towards possibilities of creating a sustainable global economy that is healthier, more just, reduces emissions and produces jobs even in the face of the pandemic.
