The Centre has approved all nine names recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for appointment to the top court, which includes three women judges.
Among the recommended names, Justice BV Nagarathna of the Karnataka high court, could go on to become the country’s first woman Chief Justice, for just over a month — from September 25 to October 29, 2027.
Justice Nagarathna is among the three women judges whose names were cleared by the SC collegium and have now been approved by the government.
She started as a lawyer in Bengaluru and was appointed as an additional judge in the HC in February 2008. Two years later, she was made a permanent judge.
In 2012, justice Nagarathna delivered a judgment emphasising on the need to regulate electronic media. “While truthful dissemination of information is an essential requirement of any broadcasting channel, sensationalism in the form of ‘Breaking News’, ‘Flash News’ or in any other form must be curbed,” she wrote in her judgment.
The current strength of the Supreme Court is 24. With the addition of nine judges, there will still be one vacancy in the top court.
