New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI) The Yamuna river's water level reached 204.61 meters at the Old Railway Bridge on Wednesday morning, remaining above the warning threshold of 204.50 meters for the second day in a row, officials reported.
The Central Water Commission issued a flood warning on Tuesday evening, predicting that the river would surpass the danger mark by Wednesday evening.
Authorities have been advised to maintain constant vigil in their respective zones and act accordingly by alerting residents living near river embankments and arranging for their relocation to safer locations.
Officials reported that the Yamuna's water level was measured at 204.61 meters at 9 am on Wednesday.
The city's warning level is set at 204.5 meters, the danger mark is at 205.3 meters, and evacuation procedures are initiated at 206 meters. The Old Railway Bridge is a crucial observation point for monitoring the river's flow and potential flood threats.
"The rise in water level is primarily due to the large volumes of water being released hourly from the Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrages. It is expected that the water level may increase further," an official from the central flood room stated.
The flood control department reports that around 37,230 cusecs of water are being released every hour from Wazirabad, while approximately 52,448 cusecs are being discharged from the Hathnikund Barrage.
Typically, water released from these barrages takes 48 to 50 hours to reach Delhi. Even lower upstream discharges are contributing to the rise in the Yamuna's water level.
