Amritpal Singh was taken to Dibrugarh jail in Assam after he surrendered to Punjab police on April 23, 2023. Earlier, his alleged followers who were arrested, had also been flown to Dibrugarh for incarceration.

This is to prevent Amritpal's contact with jailed gangsters and others who have links with Pakistan, and resources in north Indian states, as per reports.

Another reason is the language barrier so Amritpal cannot socialise with other inmates and jail staff too much, an NDTV report said.

Additionally, no prisoner has escaped from Dibrugarh jail in nearly 170 years of its existence. To bolster this, the jail now has 24-hour 3-tier security with elite Black Cat commandos, CRPF, and others.
