Agartala, Aug 21 (PTI) - A shocking incident unfolded in West Tripura district as a woman allegedly attacked her husband with acid while riding pillion on his motorcycle, police reported on Thursday. Shibaji Debbarma, the husband and a farmer by profession, is currently receiving treatment at GBP Hospital after sustaining burns to his face and neck. His condition is reported to be stable.

Officer Himadri Sarkar, in charge of Sidhai police station, recounted the events: "Shibaji Debbarma was traveling with his wife, Sumitra Debbarma, towards Chandpur on his motorcycle on Wednesday when Sumitra suddenly poured acid on Shibaji. He was forced to stop the bike and dismount due to intense pain. Unaware initially of what transpired, he began to call for help." She attempted to pour more acid, but the quick response of nearby villagers prevented further harm, allowing them to swiftly transport Shibaji to GBP Hospital."

The officer revealed that preliminary findings suggest Sumitra was possibly a victim of domestic violence, which may have motivated her drastic actions. No formal complaint has been lodged by the victim, as he remains under medical care, and the police are vigilantly monitoring developments.

"We conducted a search, but it appears Sumitra Debbarma is currently absconding following the incident," the officer concluded.
