Sparking a major political controversy in Telangana, the BJP's state unit chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar was detained by police after midnight on 5 April 2023, as per reports. The police action came ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state.

He was reportedly dragged by cops from his Karimnagar residence as his supporters tried to block the police.

Hours later, dramatic scenes were witnessed when cops shifted Kumar to another location from Bommala Ramaram police station, and then took him for a medical examination. BJP workers were seen trying to stop the car with their bare hands.
