Chhatarpur (MP), Jul 8 (PTI) - A tragic incident occurred near Bageshwar Dham in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district early Tuesday morning, resulting in the death of a woman and leaving 11 others injured when a wall of a homestay-cum-eatery collapsed, officials reported.

Authorities stated that three of the injured individuals are in critical condition. The collapse of the wall in Gada village was attributed to intense rainfall during the night, as noted by Ashutosh Shroti, the in-charge of Bamitha police station. The victim has been identified as Anita Devi, aged 40, originally from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh.

According to Sub Divisional Magistrate Akhil Rathore, the wall collapse occurred between 5 am and 6 am, injuring 12 people who were quickly transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, one woman succumbed to her injuries.

Of the injured, four were referred to Gwalior for further treatment, and five were sent back to Mirzapur after receiving initial care, the SDM stated. Two more injured persons are being treated at the district hospital in Chhatarpur and will be transferred to Howrah upon their request.

Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. RP Gupta confirmed that the wall's collapse was caused by heavy rains. Most of those affected hailed from Mirzapur and Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Some suffered from fractures, he added.

Anita Devi’s daughter Anshika, expressing her grief, recounted how several people were trapped under the wall when it gave way in the room where they were sleeping.

Eyewitnesses reported that devotees visiting Bageshwar Dham were resting in a hall of the homestay when the wall abruptly collapsed due to the sudden downpour. One of the injured, Gulab, originally from Kolkata, mentioned he had visited Bageshwar Dham for the seer's blessings. The collapse buried all the devotees in the hall, he recounted.

Neighbors quickly alerted authorities, and the injured were promptly transported to the district hospital via ambulances.

On a related note, a previous incident at the Bageshwar Dham premises on July 3, resulted in one death and four injuries when a tent collapsed due to heavy rain. Visitors had come to seek blessings from Dhirendra Shastri, the Bageshwar Dham seer.
