Jammu, Aug 18 (PTI): A member of a Village Defence Group in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district faced rough treatment at the hands of police, leading to the suspension of a constable and an inquiry into the actions of a deputy superintendent of police. The incident happened after VDG member Balbeer Singh fired warning shots into the air upon noticing suspicious activity in his village of Pernote in the Premnagar area, just before Independence Day.
The following day, Singh was called to the Premnagar police outpost, where he alleged severe mistreatment, particularly by selection grade constable Mohammad Zia. Acting on this, Doda Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Mehta initiated immediate corrective measures.
"Zia has been suspended with immediate effect and will be temporarily stationed at District Police Lines until further proceedings," a police spokesperson stated. A comprehensive departmental inquiry has been launched, with a senior officer appointed to conduct the investigation. The report is expected within two weeks.
Additionally, the behavior of DySP Afeer Jaleel, who was the Station House Officer at Thathri during the incident, will be scrutinized. The inquiry officer has been tasked with evaluating his involvement and providing detailed findings for any necessary actions.
VDG member Balbeer Singh Manhas, while leaving the hospital where he was treated for severe bruises, recounted the events. He explained firing warning shots following a vocal alert of suspicious movement, particularly with tensions heightened around Independence Day and potential threats.
Singh expressed frustration, questioning the purpose of his role if restrictions prevent him from safeguarding his village in precarious situations. "What is the point of becoming a VDG member when you are not allowed to do anything to protect your village during suspicious circumstances?" he said.
