Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday welcomed the Union Cabinet’s approval of a new semiconductor manufacturing unit in the state’s Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region, near Jewar.

He described the decision as a “historic step” in the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Sharing his thoughts on X, Adityanath said, “Under the leadership of Hon. PM Shri @narendramodi, the Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of a semiconductor unit in Uttar Pradesh's Yamuna Authority region (YEIDA) -- a historic step towards 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'.”

He also highlighted the investment and potential impact of the unit: “With an investment of Rs 3,700 crore, the unit will manufacture display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and various other devices. India is now moving towards global leadership in semiconductor manufacturing and UP is emerging as a hub for high-end electronics and semiconductor production. Thank you, Pradhanmantri Ji!”

The semiconductor unit, which will be India’s sixth facility of its kind, is a joint venture between Indian tech company HCL and global electronics giant Foxconn. The plant is to be established close to the upcoming Jewar airport, reinforcing the YEIDA region’s position as a growing industrial hub.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared that five other semiconductor projects are already in progress across India, with one nearing completion and likely to be inaugurated later this year.

The Jewar unit is scheduled to begin production in 2027. It will have the capacity to manufacture 20,000 wafers per month, translating to 36 million chips monthly. These display driver chips are vital for a range of modern devices including smartphones, laptops, automobiles, and PCs.

With a projected investment of ₹3,700 crore, the facility is expected to further strengthen India's ambitions in the semiconductor space, while boosting employment and technology innovation in Uttar Pradesh.
