Agartala, Jul 8 (PTI) Tripura Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy has requested focused consideration from the 16th Finance Commission regarding the state's potential revenue deficit, which has been influenced by political instability in Bangladesh, according to an official statement released on Monday.

The economy of Tripura, a northeastern state mostly surrounded by Bangladesh, relies heavily on bilateral relations and trade between the two regions. The statement noted, "The 16th Finance Commission convened an important meeting with representatives from all northeastern states in Delhi on Monday. Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, who attended the meeting, emphatically advocated for support for the overall development and infrastructure building in the state." As he explained, "The state's economy and revenue collection are significantly tied to Indo-Bangla relations and trade. Given the prevailing political instability, the state's socio-economic condition faces adverse effects. Medical tourism in the state is also adversely impacted by the current situation in the neighboring country."

The state finance minister called upon the Finance Commission to "pay special attention to the state's potential deficit in revenue collection" given the current circumstances in Bangladesh. Singha Roy also asked for special grants for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) to aid in its overall development. He emphasized the need for dedicated funding for forestry and ecology, alongside special grants to improve infrastructure, especially rail and road connectivity.

"During monsoon, road connectivity and railway services are disrupted, affecting supply lines to the state. Therefore, I urge the Finance Commission to allocate additional funds to address such developmental needs," he stated.

Earlier, on July 4, North Eastern Council (NEC) Secretary Satinder Kumar Bhalla held discussions with state officials in Shillong. These discussions revolved around the establishment of an energy park and a diabetes research center in Agartala, a gas-based power plant in Barmura, and the construction of a trauma center in the Dhalai district's Ambassa, an official reported.
