Agartala, Aug 11 (PTI) Tripura Police have apprehended a woman on allegations of murdering her five-month-old child in the Sepahijala district, officials announced on Monday.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Suchitra Debbarma, aged 28, allegedly ended her infant's life to clear the way for her plan to run away with a man she had been romantically involved with for the past year.

Upon receiving a tip-off from Suchitra's neighbors, a police team led by Tapas Das, the officer-in-charge of Sonamura police station, arrived at their residence in Rampadapara on Sunday.

"We discovered the baby lying on a bed while the mother was nowhere to be found. We rushed the child to the Sonamura sub-divisional hospital, where doctors pronounced the baby dead. A post-mortem is scheduled to be conducted soon," Das stated.

Das further reported that Suchitra was subsequently arrested in the village.

"Initially, it seemed that Suchitra strangled her child while her husband, Amit Debbarma, was at work on a rubber plantation. During questioning, she confessed to wanting to kill the baby to elope with another man with whom she had an extramarital relationship," he added.
