Kasaragod, Aug 28 (PTI) Three members of a family tragically lost their lives, and a fourth is critically ill after allegedly ingesting acid meant for rubber processing, in what is suspected to be a suicide at Belur, a location in the northern district, police reported on Thursday.

The deceased have been identified as Gopi Mulaveniveedu (56), his wife K V Indira (54), and their elder son Ranjesh (36), residents of Ondampuli, Parakkalayi, according to police sources.

Their younger son, Ragesh (35), is reportedly in critical condition at the Government Medical College, Pariyaram, as per a police official’s statement.

The event purportedly took place around 3.30 am, according to the Ambalathara police.

Ragesh managed to reach out to his uncle, Narayanan, residing nearby, informing him of their attempted suicide.

Community members hurried to the residence, breaking down the door to transport the four to the district hospital in Kanhangad, police noted.

Mulaveniveedu reportedly passed away while en route, while Indira and Ranjesh succumbed en route to the medical college hospital in Kannur, a police official mentioned.

Hospital reports indicate that Ragesh is in a critical condition, sustaining severe internal injuries from burns.

The police revealed that the family had been facing financial challenges lately.

The family’s grocery business at Chementhodu, Parakkalayi, was ceased due to financial losses, according to police insights.

Ranjesh’s marital life concluded in divorce.

Mulaveniveedu had previously managed land, cutting down rubber trees for coconut sapling planting a few months prior, an officer indicated.

An unnatural death case has been formally registered, and further investigations are ongoing.

The remains will be released to the family following a postmortem examination, the officer added.
