Shimla, June 26 (PTI) — Despite clear warnings to avoid rivers and streams amid intense rains in Himachal Pradesh, tourists in Mandi district have been captured defying these advisories. In a video that went viral on social media Thursday, families were seen dangerously playing with children in the swift currents of the Beas River near Panchavaktra temple. The warnings from the district administration have been reiterated several times, emphasizing the threat posed by sudden spikes in water levels during the rainy season. Deputy Commissioner and District Disaster Management Authority Chairman, Apurv Devgan, has once again urged the public, particularly tourists, to steer clear of rivers and streams at this time. A recent cloudburst in Sainj Valley, Kullu district, necessitated the release of excess water from Pandoh Dam, which may lead to a rapid rise in the Beas River's water level. In light of these developments, Devgan advised strongly against approaching the riverbanks. On Wednesday, flash floods resulting from cloudbursts caused significant destruction in Kangra and Kullu districts. The calamity led to the tragic death of two individuals, with ten others reported missing in Kangra. Extensive damage to both public and private properties has been recorded in these areas.
