The Trinamool Congress has fielded former cricketer Yusuf Pathan from West Bengal's Berhampore Lok Sabha constituency, a seat currently held by Congress state president and five-time Lok Sabha MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
Pathan, who hails from Gujarat's Baroda, used to play for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
Though Congress is yet to release its candidates for Bengal, it is certain that Chowdhury will contest from Berhampore again, potentially setting up a highly-awaited contest between the Congress strongman and the TMC juggernaut.
By fielding Yusuf Pathan from Berhampore, Mamata Banerjee seems to be challenging the Congress, and by extension Adhir Chowdhury, who has been blamed for the collapse of the alliance in Bengal.
It is speculated that Congress was reportedly seeking 8-9 seats, but TMC offered only 2 - the seats the party had won in the 2019 elections.
The list was announced from TMC's mega rally held at Brigade Parada Grounds in Kolkata, where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the party will contest Lok Sabha elections alone in all 42 seats in the state.
