Thane, July 8 (PTI): Police have filed charges against a man accused of kidnapping a 16-year-old girl from Maharashtra's Thane district and sexually assaulting her on a train bound for Akola, officials revealed.
The girl hails from Adivali in the Manpada area of Dombivli. According to senior police inspector Pandhari Kande from the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Kalyan, the 20-year-old suspect allegedly took the girl by train to Akola on June 30 and raped her during the journey.
Upon reaching Akola, the man's parents refused entry to him and the girl into their home. Consequently, he abandoned her at the Akola railway station before returning to his own residence.
Police personnel from Akola's GRP discovered the girl at the station and, after making inquiries, she reported the crime committed against her.
The Akola GRP registered a 'zero' FIR, subsequently transferring the case to their counterparts in Kalyan.
On Sunday, the Kalyan GRP lodged a formal FIR against the accused under sections 64 (rape), 74 (assault or use of criminal force with intent to outrage modesty), and 137 (kidnapping) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alongside the relevant provisions of the POCSO Act.
Efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the suspect, police confirmed.
