Thane, Jul 16 (PTI) - In a distressing incident from Maharashtra’s Thane district, a 66-year-old retired government employee was reportedly defrauded out of Rs 2.85 crore.

The con revolved around promises of lucrative returns on share investments, an official noted on Wednesday.

Residing in the Vishnu Nagar area of Dombivali, the senior citizen fell victim to the scam over a span of approximately two months.

According to his statement to the police, he received phone calls from individuals purporting to represent an investment firm and a reputed security trading company.

These individuals convinced him to “invest” Rs 2.85 crore by tempting him with the prospect of high returns.

The funds were subsequently transferred to multiple bank accounts, as per the official’s account.

However, when the promised returns failed to materialize, the victim tried to reach out to these callers.

“Initially, the responses from the accused were evasive, but they soon became completely unresponsive,” the official reported.

On July 14, the Vishnu Nagar police registered a case under the Information Technology Act following the senior citizen’s complaint, with further investigations currently underway.
