Mumbai: A 19-year-old man from Varanasi has been apprehended for allegedly assaulting a teenage girl in the western part of Mumbai after she ignored him, a police official reported on Monday. Rahul Singh, the accused, targeted a 17-year-old girl on Gosalia Road in Sanjay Nagar, Kandivali (West), on May 24 while she was walking with a friend. It is alleged that Singh verbally abused her and then picked up a brick from the roadside, striking her on the head. He also damaged her mobile phone, the official noted. The girl sustained serious injuries and was immediately taken to the civic-run Shatabdi Hospital. During the investigation, the police discovered that Singh, a resident of Varanasi, traveled to Mumbai as the girl was not responding to his calls. The two are reportedly well-acquainted with each other. The accused has been charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. An investigation is currently underway, the official added.
