Surat gets India's first steel road: all you need to know

India's first steel road has been built in Gujarat's Surat as part of a research project on recycling industrial steel waste. According to reports, steel plants across India generate 19 million tonnes of steel waste every year

Here's all you need to know about India's first steel slag road. 

  • The road 1 kilometre long and has six lanes
  • It has been made using 100% processed steel waste in all layers
  • Using steel waste reduces road thickness by 30%, according to CSIR

The project is backed by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India with CSIR India (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research), the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) and government think tank Niti Aayog.
