Erode (Tamil Nadu), Oct 3 (PTI) – A lorry transporting 35 tonnes of sugar went up in flames in the Burgur forest area in Erode district, authorities reported on Friday. According to police, the vehicle, belonging to the Pandaripura Sugar Factory in Mysuru, Karnataka, was en route to Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. The lorry was navigating the ghat roads that pass through the scenic yet treacherous Bargur forest area. The incident took place around 7:15 PM on Thursday when the driver, Syed Yacub, noticed smoke emanating from the engine as he was negotiating the first hairpin bend on Thamaraikarai ghat road. He promptly halted and attempted to extinguish the flames with water but his efforts proved futile. Unfortunately, the fire rapidly engulfed the entire lorry. Fire and Rescue Services swiftly arrived at the scene with their fire tenders to battle the blaze, but the vehicle and its cargo were completely consumed by the fire. Following a report filed by the driver, a police investigation is currently underway to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the incident.
