Officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took decisive action on Wednesday, arresting six officials from Delhi's Transport Department amid allegations of corruption and bribery. This marks a significant development in the capital following the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) recent defeat in the Delhi assembly elections.
The CBI had been receiving numerous complaints suggesting widespread corruption within the transport department. Allegations mainly centered on bribery incidents occurring in various areas, including the route from Delhi to the Gurugram border, prompting the agency to initiate a thorough investigation.
After conducting surveillance and corroborating the complaints, the CBI gathered substantial evidence pointing to corruption within the department. This evidence led to the arrest of the six officials, who are now being interrogated regarding the charges.
CBI insiders reveal that the department had been under close watch for an extended period. Complaints suggested systemic bribery at multiple levels. Upon conducting a detailed review, the CBI found initial evidence indicating that the complaints were credible.
The agency's response involved verifying the information through detailed surveillance, confirming officials' involvement in bribery-related activities. Armed with concrete evidence, the CBI proceeded to apprehend the implicated officials.
In the backdrop of these developments, AAP faced a significant downturn in the Delhi Assembly elections, the results of which were announced on February 8. The party secured only 22 of the 70 seats, as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed victory with 48 seats, regaining power in Delhi.
AAP's decade-long governance in Delhi had been marred by multiple corruption scandals. High-profile leaders within the party, such as former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, became entangled in legal controversies, with several facing incarceration due to corruption charges.
