Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 5 (PTI) An SIT has been formed to investigate a second sexual assault case against expelled Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, police officials revealed on Friday.
Leading the SIT is G Poonguzhali, Assistant Inspector General at the Police Headquarters, with a DSP rank officer and sub-inspectors also part of the team, the officials noted.
The second complaint reached the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee before being forwarded to the state police chief, prompting the Crime Branch to register a case and begin inquiries.
Crime Branch officials stated that the initial email complaint only contained the sender's email ID, lacking further contact details.
To progress the investigation, they have replied to the email, requesting the complainant to contact and provide her statement.
The claim involves allegations of sexual assault under the false pretense of marriage, as per a Crime Branch official.
However, specifics like the location and date of the incident remain unknown to the police at present.
The SIT's efforts will focus on tracing the email sender and recording her statement, which is vital for the ongoing probe, the officer highlighted.
Mamkootathil faced expulsion from the Congress party on Thursday, following a court's rejection of his anticipatory bail plea in a separate rape case.
Police confirmed that the accused is currently absconding, with a manhunt underway in Kerala and surrounding states.
