Jammu, June 25 (PTI): Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated an exhibition in Jammu, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Emergency declared in India, and emphasized that ensuring the younger generation understands this historical event will prevent the rise of dictatorship in the future.

Describing the Emergency as "the most inhuman act in India’s democratic history," Sinha highlighted the observance of 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' as not only a remembrance but also an occasion to reinforce a commitment to upholding democratic principles and constitutional integrity.

The 50th anniversary marks the date of June 25, 1975, when the Emergency was declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Sinha stressed the importance of educating the younger population about this period when democracy was significantly compromised to ensure the protection of democratic values moving forward.

He recalled the harsh realities of that era, emphasizing the suppression of civil liberties, violations of constitutional protections, and the stagnation of nation-building efforts. Honoring those who resisted and made sacrifices during the Emergency, Sinha urged for a renewed commitment to reinforcing the pillars of democracy and contributing to the nation's progress.

“I consider the Emergency as the most inhuman act in India’s democratic history, and today serves as an opportunity for deep reflection and reaffirmation of our dedication to democratic values and constitutional morality,” Sinha stated.
