Delivering a setback to his rival O Panneerselvam, the Supreme Court has upheld the Madras High Court order which restored former chief minister E Palaniswami as AIADMK’s single leader.

An apex court bench pronounced the verdict on a batch of cross petitions concerning amendments made to the AIADMK bylaws during the 2022 general council meeting.

Palaniswami was elected as AIADMK’s interim general secretary, in the general council meeting after the high court had rejected a plea by Paneerselvam to stay the conduct of the general council meeting.

The High Court had then observed that it cannot interfere in the squabbles of a political party.
