The Supreme Court on May 3, 2023, declined to convert Babbar Khalsa terrorist Balwant Singh Rajoana's death sentence to life imprisonment.
The court said that the competent authority will deal with his mercy petition when deemed necessary.
Rajoana was convicted for his role in an explosion outside the Punjab civil secretariat that killed Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh and 16 others on August 31, 1995.
He has been in jail for the past 26 years.
