Gangtok, Aug 8 (PTI): The Central Government has announced the appointment of Santanu Kumar Swain, a professor from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), as the new Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University.
This central university, situated in the Himalayan state, will see Swain at its helm for a tenure of five years, or until he reaches the age of 70, whichever comes first.
The Ministry of Education released a notification on Thursday, confirming that President Droupadi Murmu made the appointment in her role as the visitor of the university.
Swain, currently with an academic role at BHU, is recognized for his extensive experience at one of India’s premier institutions.
He will be succeeding Professor Abhijit Dutta, who has been serving as the officiating Vice Chancellor of the university.
This leadership change is seen as significant, as Sikkim University continues to advance in academic and research excellence within the eastern Himalayan region.
The ministry has officially communicated the appointment to pertinent authorities, including the President’s Secretariat, University Grants Commission (UGC), and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
