During a hearing in the Supreme Court on the issue of same-sex marriage, the Narendra Modi government said that it would set up a special committee.

The Union government said on May 3, 2023, that the committee would look at administrative steps which can address some concerns of same-sex couples without going into the legalisation of marriage.

The government sought suggestions from petitioners on what administrative steps can be taken.
