Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud while hearing a case seeking legal recognition for same-sex marriages remarked that the notion of a biological man or woman is not absolute. He added that being a man or a woman is 'not restricted to the genitals'.

Justice Chandrachud said this after Solictor General Tushar Mehta argued that marriage laws are based around 'a relationship between a biological man and a biological female'
