Noida, August 25 (PTI): In a tragic case of alleged dowry violence, Rohit, the 28-year-old brother-in-law of Nikki, who was reportedly set ablaze in Greater Noida, has been apprehended, as confirmed by police on Monday.
The Kasna Police captured the suspect near Sirsa Toll Chauraha following a tip-off and intelligence-led operations, officials noted in a statement.
On August 22, a case was filed against Rohit at Kasna Police Station, under sections 103(1) for murder, 115(2) for voluntarily causing hurt, and 61(2) for attempting criminal activities punishable with life imprisonment, as per the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Following the incident that incited widespread regional outrage, Rohit had been in hiding, police reported.
Nikki's husband, Vipin, alongside his brother Rohit, and their parents, have been named in the FIR. Three individuals, including Vipin, are under arrest.
Reports suggest that Nikki was brutally assaulted and then set on fire at her domicile in Sirsa village by her husband Vipin Bhati and his family, on a Thursday night.
Disturbing footage of the assault circulated extensively on social platforms, captured by Nikki’s elder sister, Kanchan, who is married into the same family. One video depicts Nikki being dragged by her hair, while another captures her engulfed in flames before collapsing.
Vipin Bhati was detained on Saturday, and during a reported escape attempt on Sunday, he was shot in the leg by police. His mother, Daya, aged 55, was also taken into custody that same day.
Officers disclosed that during an evidence recovery mission, Vipin allegedly snatched a sub-inspector's firearm and opened fire, prompting a retaliatory response.
This case has drawn significant attention following Nikki's family's allegations of years of incessant torture and mounting dowry demands from the in-laws, since her 2016 marriage.
The family claims they have already provided a Scorpio SUV, a motorcycle, and gold jewelry, but further demands escalated to Rs 36 lakh in cash and a call for a luxury car.
Nikki's elder sister, Kanchan, who also witnessed the ordeal, revealed to reporters that Nikki was attacked in the presence of her young son, asserting that Nikki was drenched in a flammable substance and ignited.
Sadly, Nikki succumbed to her catastrophic injuries en route to a Delhi hospital, police noted.
Bhikahri Singh, the victim's father, stated that his daughters, Kanchan and Nikki, were married to the Bhati brothers, Rohit and Vipin, in 2016. “Since then, both daughters have been tortured alongside incessant dowry demands,” he alleged.
