Puri, Jun 25 (PTI) The seaside town of Puri has transformed into a fortress as preparations are underway for the annual Rath Yatra festivities of Lord Jagannath on June 27. Around 10,000 security personnel have been deployed, according to police sources. Besides, over 250 AI-enabled cameras have been strategically installed for enhanced surveillance, ensuring safety during the grand event.

Security forces, including central armed forces, are rigorously preparing to manage the mass influx of devotees eager to witness the event involving Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Jagannath, who come forth from the 12th-century temple to join devotees from across the globe. Given that this year's Rath Yatra occurs post-Pahalgam terror incident, a comprehensive security plan is being executed, said a senior police official.

"For the first time, an Integrated Command and Control Room has been set up in Puri. A network of 275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras extends from Uttara Chhak to Puri town and between Puri and Konark, providing continuous live feed monitoring," explained Odisha DGP Y B Khurania, while overseeing the final phases of security arrangements for the festival.

The DGP highlighted that these AI-driven systems will monitor traffic, crowd dynamics, and assist in managing any emergencies. To boost security further, sub-control rooms are active at critical points. NSG snipers, anti-drone technology, and aerial drones are being employed for superior surveillance, alongside specialized anti-sabotage teams, bomb squads, and dog units.

Incorporating advanced planning, the security deployment includes Odisha Police and eight companies from the Central Armed Police Force. To bolster coastal security, Marine Police, the Coast Guard, and the Indian Navy are on alert.

A real-time chatbot has been launched to guide visitors with parking and routing information, according to DGP Khurania. Expectations are set for about 15 lakh people on the first two days, necessitating focused attention on service and safety for devotees.

"Efficient arrangements are in place for a systematic darshan experience," Khurania emphasized. Given the high-security designation around the Shri Jagannath Temple, its significance peaks during the Rath Yatra, necessitating special focus, noted Intelligence Director R P Koche. Extra security is being provided for Sri Gundicha Temple and the trio of chariots.

ADG of Police (Modernisation), Soumendra Priyadarshi, confirmed that effective measures are being implemented to control crowd flow, while ADG (Law and Order) Sanjay Kumar stressed the necessity of cooperation from police personnel for smoothly conducting the Rath Yatra.

The grand event, Shree Jagannath’s Rath Yatra, will initiate on June 27, concluding on July 8 when the deities return to the main temple.
