Chandigarh/Amritsar, Sep 4 (PTI) Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria submitted a comprehensive report on the recent flood situation to Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar on Thursday. Earlier, Minister Chouhan arrived in Amritsar to undertake a visit to the flood-affected regions of Punjab. He plans to visit villages across the districts of Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Kapurthala to engage with the farmers impacted by the flood. Governor Kataria handed over the flood situation report for several districts including Amritsar, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, and Ferozepur, as per officials. Having toured all five flood-stricken districts from September 1 to 4, the governor briefed Minister Chouhan about the significant damage to life, property, crops, and infrastructure due to the floods. The governor also updated him on the ongoing relief and rehabilitation missions being conducted jointly by the Punjab government, district administrations, the Army, NDRF, and other agencies. Chouhan’s Punjab visit aims to interact with people affected by the floods and understand their pressing needs. He promised comprehensive backing from the union government to aid the state in pursuing efficient relief and recovery operations. Punjab is presently undergoing one of its most severe flooding crises in decades, attributed to the overflow of rivers like the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi, along with seasonal streams owing to intense rainfall in their catchment zones in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. The situation has worsened due to further heavy rains within Punjab, compounding the hardships faced by residents. The floods have resulted in the loss of 37 lives and affected over 3.55 lakh individuals. It is reported that crops have been destroyed over an expanse of 1.75 lakh hectares.
