Pune, July 3 (PTI) - A disturbing incident unfolded in Pune when an unknown individual allegedly raped a 22-year-old IT professional by deceitfully entering her apartment. The suspect posed as a courier delivery agent, according to police reports issued on Thursday.
The accused also audaciously took a selfie using the victim's phone. The image captured shows the woman’s back alongside a partial view of the perpetrator's face.
Furthermore, the suspect left a menacing message on the victim's phone, threatening to share her photos on social media if she reported the crime to anyone. He chillingly warned, "I will come again," as stated by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5), Rajkumar Shinde.
The crime occurred around 7:30 pm on Wednesday at a residential complex in the Kondhwa neighborhood of Pune. Law enforcement authorities are actively pursuing the suspect.
At the time of the assault, the victim, an IT graduate from a local college employed at a private company, was alone because her brother was out of town.
The suspect gained entry to her residence under the pretense of delivering a bank-related document and requested a pen to sign a paper. As the victim turned away, he intruded further into the apartment and locked the door behind him.
Officer Shinde noted that the victim's memory of the events following the initial entry is unclear until she regained consciousness approximately by 8:30 pm. She subsequently alerted her relatives, who contacted the police.
The accused significantly escalated the threat by capturing a selfie and warning the victim not to disclose the crime, per police statements.
He ominously indicated in his message that he intended to "come again."
Authorities suspect the use of a substance to render the victim unconscious and are investigating whether a spray was employed.
Efforts are underway to create a sketch of the perpetrator, and police are reviewing footage from CCTV cameras located within the housing complex, Shinde stated.
The victim has been directed to undergo a medical examination.
A formal case has been filed under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 64 (punishment for rape), 77 (voyeurism), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation), as confirmed by police authorities.
