Union minister Anurag Thakur hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the latter's remarks regarding Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar.

At an event on 2 April 2023, Thakur said that Gandhi's great-grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru had written an "apology" letter to the British to get out of jail after being arrested during a protest over the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

The minister was commenting on Gandhi's statement that his surname is not Savarkar and he will not apologise for his remark linking the Modi name to thieves which led to his conviction and consequent disqualification from Parliament.
