Amid celebrations at the Congress party's headquarters in Delhi, one motif which featured prominently was the mace of the Hindu deity Hanuman. One person was even seen dressed in full attire as Hanuman.
The Hindu god became the object of a political tug-of-war during the election campaign when Congress compared the right-wing group Bajrang Dal to the banned Islamist outfit Popular Front of India.
Congress had said that it would ban organisations from spreading hatred. BJP had called it an attack on the Hindu faith and followers of Hanuman.
