Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised a toast thanking the Bidens for organising a State Dinner for him. In Western society, a toast is a traditional raising of glasses and drinking accompanied by a small speech, usually in honour of someone.
The Indian premier said, "I request that all of you join me in raising a toast. A toast to our wonderful hosts - President Biden and Dr Jill Biden. A toast to good health, prosperity, and the pursuit of happiness, to liberty, equality, and fraternity. And to the everlasting bonds of friendship between India and the US."
Subsequently, PM Modi and Biden clinked their glasses and sipped their drink, thus concluding the ritual.
PM Modi also spoke about the special vegetarian menu curated for the dinner. "I know that everyone would be eager to have dinner after seeing tonight's special menu," he said while thanking Jill Biden.
