The Supreme Court on 26th February observed that permanent commission of women short-service commission officers in Indian Coast Guard is a must.

Attorney General R Venkataramani said that he would ask the Centre to file an affidavit in the matter, adding that the Coast guard is different from the navy and army.

However, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said that such an argument does not hold water in 2024.

The CJI said that women cannot be left out. He asked the Centre to look into the matter otherwise the court will take necessary steps.
