Palghar: In a shocking case from Maharashtra's Palghar district, a 27-year-old woman disguised herself as a man to rob her sister's father-in-law of jewellery worth over Rs 1.5 crore, as revealed by police on Wednesday.
The crime occurred on Monday afternoon in Manickpur, Vasai, and the woman was apprehended later that night in Navsari, Gujarat.
The accused, posing as a man, visited the 66-year-old father-in-law, who lived alone, under the guise of wanting to inspect the house for a potential deal.
Once inside, she convinced the elderly man to accompany her to the toilet to check it, locked him inside, and absconded with 1.4 kg of gold and 2.3 kg of silver items; their total value being Rs 1,50,84,050, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Madan Ballal.
An FIR was filed the same day against the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for theft, robbery, and wrongful confinement. Police scrutinized between 75 to 80 CCTV footages for clues.
"During the investigation, we spotted footage capturing a man carrying the stolen items and placing them in a location before vanishing. Subsequently, a woman retrieved these items," stated the official.
Technical surveillance, combined with intelligence inputs, directed investigators to suspect the involvement of a relative from Gujarat in the crime.
Swift action by a crime branch team, in collaboration with Navsari police, led to the detention of the accused, Jyoti Mohan Bhanushali, on Monday night, confirmed Ballal.
The accused admitted to masterminding the robbery herself. Disguised as a man, she knew her sister's father-in-law lived alone, which facilitated her crime.
Police have successfully recovered all the stolen items, and the investigation is ongoing.
