Raichur (Karnataka), Jul 10: An alleged newborn kidnapping attempt at a government hospital in Raichur was thwarted by vigilant attendants and visitors, police reported on Thursday.

A group of individuals, purportedly dressed in saris, infiltrated the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) during the early hours on Wednesday. They targeted the maternity ward on the fourth floor, taking advantage of the fact that most attendants were asleep.

One of the suspects attempted to abduct a newborn, raising the suspicions of nearby attendants who quickly intervened. The abductor, disguised as a woman, was apprehended after a brief struggle and subsequently handed over to the police.

Police stated that two additional individuals were involved in the attempted kidnapping but managed to escape. Eyewitnesses expressed serious concerns regarding the absence of home guard personnel, who were reportedly off duty during the incident.

The apprehended suspect was later transferred to the Market Police Station by the public. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
